A break from my break.
This weekend I traveled 200 miles to Evansville, IN. It was probably the most needed weekend of my life. The trip was all born out of a need. A desperate desire to see more than one person I know and spend more than a couple of hours with them (sorry Ally, love. Our Christmas Eve together was nice, but I needed something with a little more escape from KY in it).
ETA: And on my way to Louisville, I stopped to see my Ally. And she was marvelous and fawning over some Captain McFuckmehard. But now I don’t think he matters that much. ![]()
So, I packed up enough clothes to stay a week and headed to Haubstadt, IN, the birthplace of my friend and brother Jared, where we commenced to have a good time.
We started off right, meeting up with my favorite brother and awesome friend, Rob, and another one of Jared’s buddies, grabbing a beer and then heading to the local eatery which promises they have the “coldest beer in the world”. Well, you can’t just see that and not try. So I tried. Two “fishbowls” (they looked more like pimp chalices) of beer and an awesome burger later, we were all on our way. After that, a stop to procure liquid enjoyment for the night’s festivities and then we were off to Jared’s father’s cabin to consume them. And consume them we did. After drinking since about 6, and because I hadn’t drank in a while, by midnight I was exhausted (not wasted from drinking, but tired from the whole day) and decided to call it a night, crashing in a la-z-boy at the house.
Up the next morning, off to get food to settle the stomach, and then came probably the most interesting and fun part of the weekend. I picked up a shotgun and obliterated clay pigeons for the bulk of my Saturday afternoon. It was the most fun I have had outdoors in a long while. After packing the firearms up, I could tell that my day needed to be winding down soon. So, off to Hacienda to get some good Indiana Mexican, a quick trip to Starbucks to ensure that we could get in a few hours of Halo 2 playing, and then Rob, Jared and myself retired for the night. It was good having those two around again, if only for a little while. I missed how much I was over at their place, and how much their company meant to me.
Enough of the sentiments.
We spent the next two hours calling each other everything but straight white Christian men who had good mothers. If you want the full list of insults, I can send them along. Then we popped in Grandma’s Boy, and I finally got to see what happened in the second half of that movie. It was better than I thought it would have been. By this time it was 2:30, and wake-up call was at 8 because Jared had to work on Sunday, so all promptly passed out. Sunday brought that moment we all didn’t want. It felt so normal to be in each other’s company again. Like old times. But we knew that we had to make new times as well. We said our goodbyes, hopped in our cars and headed back to where we came.
It was good to have the break this past weekend. And here’s to the mini-break I have coming up this weekend. Party on Saturday with my cousin, and then on Sunday… well, I’ll tell you about that when I get back from it.
